<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Below is extracted from a Washington Post article (<a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/worldviews/wp/2015/02/02/map-if-the-size-of-countries-reflected-their-populations/" target="_blank">link here</a>)</span></div>
<div style="line-height: 1.8em; margin-bottom: 24px;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">As you can see, our sense of geographic space gets rather radically rearranged by this map.</span></div>
<div style="line-height: 1.8em; margin-bottom: 24px;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Vast countries such as Russia, Canada and Australia turn into small rump states and slivers of territory. The United States is home to only <a href="http://www.npr.org/blogs/goatsandsoda/2015/01/28/381971608/india-grows-russia-shrinks-mapping-countries-by-population" style="border-bottom-color: rgb(212, 212, 212); border-bottom-style: solid; border-bottom-width: 1px; color: #2e6d9d; text-decoration: none; zoom: 1;" target="_blank">5 percent</a>of the world's population and its size suitably reflects that diminished reality. Europe, and not South Asia, appears to be the real Asian subcontinent.</span></div>
<div style="line-height: 1.8em; margin-bottom: 24px;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">It should be noted that TeaDranks identifies the territories of Abkhazia and South Ossetia as independent states, though most of the international community considers them to be part of the republic of Georgia. The Reddit user also incorporates the territory of Crimea, controversially annexed by Moscow last year, as part of Russia.</span></div>
<div style="line-height: 1.8em; margin-bottom: 24px;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">What the map emphasizes is the <a href="http://yaleglobal.yale.edu/content/can-asia-step-21st-century-leadership" style="border-bottom-color: rgb(212, 212, 212); border-bottom-style: solid; border-bottom-width: 1px; color: #2e6d9d; text-decoration: none; zoom: 1;" target="_blank">primacy of Asia</a>. The continent's immensity is understood in the West, but not truly appreciated. </span></div>
<div style="line-height: 1.8em; margin-bottom: 24px;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Some Asian cities, as delineated on the map, are larger than most European countries.</span></div>
<div style="line-height: 1.8em; margin-bottom: 24px;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Of course, many of these Asian countries are still struggling to cope with the demands posed by their massive populations. But as the continent boasts some of the world's most dynamic developing economies, this map is a useful illustration for why some believe <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asian_Century" style="border-bottom-color: rgb(212, 212, 212); border-bottom-style: solid; border-bottom-width: 1px; color: #2e6d9d; text-decoration: none; zoom: 1;" target="_blank">the 21st century will be the Asian Century</a>.</span></div>

In this data-filled — and quite charming — talk, human resources expert Rainer Strack suggests that countries ought to look across borders for mobile and willing job seekers. When we consider the various cultures that have developed within Europe and stretching to both the Near East and American continents, we sometimes forget that many of these started with a common language roots many centuries in the past.<br />

As you will note from the diagram (click on it to enlarge), what is called Proto - Indo - European (PIE) is suspected to have roots from perhaps 3700 BCE<br />

<a href="http://static.natprior.org/images/npp-logo-30th.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://static.natprior.org/images/npp-logo-30th.jpg" height="100" width="100" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">A wonderful group called the <a href="http://nationalpriorities.org/" target="_blank">National Priorities Project</a> has taken some time to graphically illustrate items such as <a href="http://nationalpriorities.org/budget-basics/federal-budget-101/spending/" target="_blank">where our taxes go</a> and what is the relative priorities of national spending. Using projections from 2015, an interesting picture emerges.</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">First, let's look at overall spending.</span></span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfm3JiiECUEvpVHOBMFjSlNuaVvVYobkscAUiifiGf-BSO3oZx-hTyJVBwi0Isk7lhxvBlm37nppkAUZlq_ytzcz5MH_XBtCF6LK3Kqc-I93UxRPipNtAMgyNcIUxgd8KQeKfDVD5DezU/s1600/us+tot+spend.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfm3JiiECUEvpVHOBMFjSlNuaVvVYobkscAUiifiGf-BSO3oZx-hTyJVBwi0Isk7lhxvBlm37nppkAUZlq_ytzcz5MH_XBtCF6LK3Kqc-I93UxRPipNtAMgyNcIUxgd8KQeKfDVD5DezU/s1600/us+tot+spend.jpg" height="400" width="500" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">At first cut it is obvious that a big portion of money is spent on two major social programs, over 60%. These are mandated by law and so Congress has no ability to reduce these expenses within the budget process.</span></span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://static.natprior.org/images/fb101/spending_-_mandatory,_discretionary,_interest_pie_2014.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://static.natprior.org/images/fb101/spending_-_mandatory,_discretionary,_interest_pie_2014.gif" height="396" width="500" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Given the interest component on the national debt (currently at 6%), this only allows for 30% discretionary spending.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;"><br /></span></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHMxuhutWVTrOt8jzxAuiQUshCh8Gn7QIUZonuqkXdLBQXyr_h8utuLugN6EY7Bov0JAWx__Ymg_2lzKgbTVtuHgegZc1dc8LBMvdyP730ytY_L9oG0CAEvMBGMjgFeVaaF2DXTXPezws/s1600/us+spending.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHMxuhutWVTrOt8jzxAuiQUshCh8Gn7QIUZonuqkXdLBQXyr_h8utuLugN6EY7Bov0JAWx__Ymg_2lzKgbTVtuHgegZc1dc8LBMvdyP730ytY_L9oG0CAEvMBGMjgFeVaaF2DXTXPezws/s1600/us+spending.png" height="401" width="500" />As</a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">As you can see above, much of this is spent on Defense items (over 60% when we include Veteran Benefits).</span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">So, when it is all said and done, all the political posturing often focused on these other issues (education, energy, science, transport, etc.) is really about 12% of the budget.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">The <b>most dangerous element of this mix is the interest on the debt.</b> With interest rates the lowest in decades, at less than 1% for short term treasury bill and notes, it is still at 6%. If interest rates were to only double, which they will surely to at some point, the expense suddenly leaps above 10% of spending. <span style="color: magenta;">If interest rates move to historical rates of 5% or 6%, then the payment on interest will overwhelm any discretionary and much military spending.</span></span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">*****</span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Another way is to view this from the point of view of how are taxes spent. This National Priorities chart below takes the above illustrations (from 2013) and shows it in a slightly different fashion.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;"><br /></span></span>

flow. “The stocks are the number of migrants living in a country,” says

is trickier. It’s the rate of human traffic over time. </span></span></span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Stress. It makes your heart pound, your breathing quicken and your forehead sweat. But while stress has been made into a public health enemy, new research suggests that stress may only be bad for you if you believe that to be the case. Psychologist Kelly McGonigal in a recent TED talk urges us to see stress as a positive, and introduces us to an unsung mechanism for stress reduction: reaching out to others. </span></span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">It has become apparent to me that just as a basic knowledge of how an automobile internal combustion engine and power train work, or how electricity flow from the power plant to my wall outlet, it is becoming more and more useful to understand information flows on the internet. This is especially true is you have have family members deeply involved in enterprises that rely primarily on website portals. Lemi Orhan Ergin has created an excellent overview presentation worth a few minutes to click through. It defines concepts and aligns the terminology in an easily understandable way.
